Pub brawl was like 'Gangs of New York'

GARDAI are investigating a massive pub brawl involving a Traveller gang which left several injured, including a female garda.

Up to 100 people were in the Castle Inn pub, in Rathfarnham in Dublin when broken bottles, chairs, fire extinguishers and potted plants were used as weapons.

Pub owner John Donnellan described the event as being like a scene from the movie 'Gangs of New York'.

"My wife Cathy got a bottle under the eye. The fight just erupted from nothing. A red mist descended somewhere," he said.

Mr Donnellan said he believes the violence erupted after a man threw a chair at a woman sitting at the bar.

"It started in one corner where the men were. The women were upstairs. Then I saw a man throw a chair over a balcony and it came all the way across the bar and hit a woman and floored her at my feet. It was horrific," he said.

He said people were throwing glasses from the balcony down on people below in an act of "unbridled savagery".

Pictures were ripped off walls before the violence spilled out on to the street where the fighting continued shortly after 11.30pm on Tuesday.

Gardai said two men were arrested while three others were taken to hospital.

A female garda was also treated for minor injuries.
