Protesters say half of protected bogs being cut
OVER half of the country's protected bogs have been cut this year, according to protesters who took part in a stand-off with gardai over the weekend.
More than 150 turf cutters and protesters gathered at Monivea bog in Co Galway where turf was cut on 74 banks on the Special Areas of Conservation (SAC) designated bog.
Protesters claim that over half of the 53 bogs which have been designated SACs have been cut in the first six months of the year, despite a crackdown by gardai and the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS).
"There are 53 designated bogs, but up to 13 of these are no longer in use for turf cutting," said Bog Action Group spokesman Dermot Moran.
Illegal cutting was carried out on three bogs over the weekend – one in Galway and two in Roscommon.
