Crèche firms operated by the north Dublin couple whose crèche business was at the centre of an RTÉ investigation alleging mistreatment of children recorded combined profits of €1.13m last year.

Two new sets of accounts from crèche firms led by Deirdre and Padraig Kelly, from Malahide, show that combined profits jumped by 27.5pc to €1.13m in the 12 months to the end of October.

The combined cash pile at the two crèche firms increased by €543,954 from €1.33m to €1.879m.

The business expanded last year with the numbers the two crèche firms employ increasing from 190 to 202.

New accounts filed by the couple's main firm, Links Crèche and Montessori Ltd, show that last year it recorded a profit of €638,754 - a 23pc increase on the €519,572 profit recorded in 2017.

The company's accumulated profits at the end of October last stood at €1.6m, while the firm's cash pile increased from €685,286 to €867,372.

The firm's two directors, Deirdre and Padraig Kelly, paid themselves an aggregate €175,000.

In 2013, the Links Abington crèche in Malahide was the subject of an RTÉ 'Breach of Trust' documentary. In 2015, the firm that operates the crèche was fined €1,000 in court after pleading guilty to eight charges pertaining to incidents on eight dates in February and March in 2013.
