GARDAÍ are investigating after a man was found dead in the Emergency Department (ED) waiting room at one of the country's largest hospitals.

The man, aged in his 40s, was pronounced dead on Saturday afternoon at Tallaght University Hospital.

It is understood he had not checked into the hospital, sought medical treatment or received triage.

So far it is unclear how long the man had been in the hospital before he died.

He was found unresponsive in the public seats in the ED waiting area at around 4.30pm on Saturday.

An internal review is taking place at the hospital, with CCTV footage expected to be examined in order to estimate how long the man was there.

Gardaí said his death was not being treated as suspicious.
