Prison officer suffers savage inmate attack
A PRISON officer received 16 stitches to the face yesterday after an inmate slashed him with a home-made weapon in the country's biggest jail.
Tensions were high in Dublin's Mountjoy Prison, located in the north inner city, last night following the brutal attack which left the staff member in need of hospital treatment.
It is understood that a man serving a nine-month sentence for drugs offences attacked the officer -- who is in his 30s -- around lunchtime yesterday, in the separation unit of the prison.
The cells at the unit have been used in recent weeks to ease overcrowding at the prison which houses more than 700 prisoners. The officer was taken to the Mater Hospital, where he received 16 stitches to the face.
The Irish Prison Service said it had agreed to meet with the Prison Officers' Association next week. Prison authorities and gardai will carry out a full investigation into the incident.
