Price of a full Irish breakfast to rise as pork costs soar

Peter Flanagan

THE full Irish breakfast is to get more expensive as pork prices rise to record levels.

Higher food prices have been a concern for some time, as US farmers grapple with a drought that has decimated cereal crops and sent grain prices soaring.

Now it has begun to push up feed prices, prompting some farmers to pull out of pig farming. Already UK farmers have warned of a dwindling supply of bacon, and now the IFA has made a similar warning.

"Pig meat farmers are under huge pressure at the moment," said the association's pigmeat chairman, Tim Cullinan. "Retailers have huge margins on bacon and pork but those have been cut into given the increase in prices on wholesale markets, and it is a near certainty those increases will be passed on to customers," he claimed.
