President Higgins tells US audience of Celtic Tiger Irish betrayal
PRESIDENT Michael D Higgins has spoken of the righteous anger felt by Irish people at the betrayal of trust by those individuals and institutions that characterised the Celtic Tiger economy.
He made his comments at a reception at the Irish consulate in New York.
He was speaking one the first day of a five-day visit to the US and his first overseas as president.
Mr Higgins added that Irish people are moving on from those feelings of betrayal.
"But far from being defeated by circumstances, the Irish people are, for the most part, moving on and not allowing themselves to sink into any disabling cynicism or fatalism," he said.
