PRESIDENT Michael D Higgins has signed the abortion legislation into law – without referring it to the Supreme Court.
The President’s advisory body, the Council of State, debated the Protection of Life in Pregnancy Bill 2013 for almost four hours yesterday.
The Irish Independent learned that former President Mary Robinson and former Taoiseach both recommended that the contentious bill should be signed into law – and allow it to be challenged in the courts through individual cases.
“In accordance with Article 31 of the Constitution, President Michael D. Higgins yesterday convened a meeting of the Council of State to discuss the Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill 2013,” the president’s office said in a short statement today.
“President Higgins has today (30 July) signed the Bill into law.”
