President enjoys night out with Nidge
IRELAND'S President got up close and personal with one of the country's most notorious criminals last night – Nidge.
President Michael D Higgins saw a host of stars, including 'Love/Hate' star Tom Vaughan Lawlor, come out to honour him at the Galway Chamber President's Dinner, where he was conferred with a Lifetime Achievement Award.
In accepting the award the President told the 'Who's Who' from the world of film that the arts and culture sector was "unique" in its employment-creation potential but also in the sustainability of that employment.
"It is important that we continue to invest in creative and cultural industries and recognise that such investment produces a multiplier effect far greater than the quantum of the financial input," he said.
There was a 'Love/Hate' reunion at the event, with stars including Vaughan Lawlor, Aiden Gillen and writer Stuart Carolan in attendance.
They were joined by Brendan Gleeson, documentary maker Louis Marcus, artist Constance Short and director Michael John McDonagh.
Messages on the night of the Gala Ball at the Radisson Blu Hotel were broadcast from Gabriel Byrne and Fionnuala Flanagan.
