A potential gangland hit was foiled when gardaí discovered two guns in a stolen car.

Detectives believe that the weapons and the vehicle were going to be used in the latest Dublin feud murder.

However they have been unable to determine who was behind the deadly plot.

A senior source said: "This was a significant seizure and there can be little doubt but that this car was primed and ready for a gangland hit."

Uniformed Gardaí searched an unoccupied car on Casement Avenue, Finglas shortly before 3pm yesterday.

While carrying out the search, two firearms, ammunition and a fuel canister were discovered concealed in the blue coloured Nissan Pulsar, which was stolen from Dublin 13 two weeks ago.

Uniformed Gardaí were assisted by local Detective Units with the search and recovery.

The two firearms, ammunition, the car and its remaining contents were seized for technical examination. No arrests have been made and investigations are on going.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information, particularly those who may have seen the blue Nissan Pulsar being driven in the Finglas area or elsewhere to contact them at Finglas Garda Station on 01 6667500, The Garda Confidential Line 1800 666111 or any Garda Station.
