Gardai are continuing to investigate the death of a 51-year-old woman, who was found with serious head injuries at her home in Kilkenny yesterday.
The woman was named locally as Siobhan Stapleton, a married mother of five from Thomastown, Co Kilkenny.
The alarm was raised at around 3pm yesterday when the woman was found seriously injured in the yard of the family home.
She was rushed by ambulance to St Luke's Hospital in Kilkenny, but died from her injuries before she could be transferred to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin.
A post-mortem is due to be carried out today to establish how Mrs Stapleton died.
Her devastated husband, plumber Peter Stapleton, was last night being comforted by relatives and was said to be in a state of shock.
The couple were childhood sweethearts and had been together since they were 16 years old.
They are understood to have one son and four daughters.
The cause of Ms Stapleton's death was unknown last night. Gardai said they were not commenting on the death for operational reasons.
A family friend said last night that they were devastated by the loss of Mrs Stapleton and still did not know how she sustained her injuries.
The Stapletons are well known in Thomastown and one local described the sudden death of the mother as a "shocking tragedy for thefamily."
