INDEPENDENT Dublin South TD Shane Ross has announced an unlikely alliance with Dail newcomer Michael Fitzmaurice of Roscommon South-Leitrim.

Ireland's newest political party may include other unlikely allies, Independent TDs, mixing town and country and left and right. Dublin North Central Independent Finian McGrath, a TD since 2002, is left wing. Noel Grealish from Galway is a former PD.

Tom Fleming, from Scartaglin in Kerry, was a lifetime Fianna Fail activist in a mainly rural community before being elected as an Independent in 2011. John Halligan was a Workers' Party politician in Waterford city before becoming an Independent TD in 2011.

Stephen Donnelly, a TD for Wicklow, says he decided to stand for the Dail the day the IMF landed in Ireland. Mattie McGrath of Tipperary and Denis Naughten of Roscommon, originally from Fianna Fail and Fine Gael respectively, are considering joining the new line-up.
