Varadkar to support 12-week abortion
Taoiseach Leo Varadkar will support repealing the Eighth Amendment and campaign for more liberalised abortion laws, including full access to abortion services in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.
The Government will this week recommend a 'repeal and enable' Referendum Bill with the vote to be held in late May or early June.
Health Minister Simon Harris will publish, within weeks, legislation that will be put to the Dail if the referendum is passed.
Government sources say the legislation "will be in line" with the recommendations of the Oireachtas Committee on the Eighth Amendment, although there will be "technical" changes such as to also allow a gynaecologist to prescribe abortion pills.
