Just hours after announcing her resignation as Tanaiste, a defiant Frances Fitzgerald sent a clear message to her opponents that she was not going away for good.

Leaving the selection convention, Ms Fitzgerald said she is "committed to public service and continuing".

"I'm delighted to be selected tonight, it's been a long day and long week, so it's a great honour to be selected," she said."It's been a good evening for me," she added.

Finance Minister, Paschal Donohoe arrived at the convention to give a 10 minute speech in support of Ms Fitzgerald.

He also backed Ms Fitzgerald's words that she will be vindicated following the Charleton Tribunal.

"Rarely has a person of such quality and such character as Frances has been tested in the way that she has been tested over the last number of days," Mr Donohoe said.

"I have no doubt at all that when all the work is done and when all that needs to be done and that will be done by the Tribunal that Frances set up herself, that her contribution to justice and her department, for doing the right thing, will be shown in that work," he added.

The Minister said Ms Fitzgerald sacrificing her position saved an imminent election."I don't know when the next election will be, we know when it would have been if somebody didn't make a very tough decision, and as tough an evening as we face tonight, and as tough a day as we've faced today, it would have even been more challenging if it hadn't been for the choice that your representative made," he said.
