When Micheál Martin eventually got to talk to Boris Johnson on Wednesday - 24 hours after he had first requested the phone call with the prime minister - he was aggrieved.

The Taoiseach had just read the 58-page Internal Market Bill which would empower British ministers to pass regulations on trade and state aid even if they breach the Brexit withdrawal deal and specifically the Northern Ireland protocol, the element of the deal aimed at avoiding a hard border.
