TDs had their breakfast cut short today after the Dáil struggled to meet the quorum required to begin the day’s business.

Amid bizarre scenes, Dail business was delayed because just eight deputies were present in the chamber.

The respective party whips were forced to ask TDs to leave their offices and the Dáil canteen in order to ensure 20 were present for questions to Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald.

Tanaiste and Labour Party leader Joan Burton was one of the TDs who entered the chamber until the quorum was met.

Diaspora Minister Dinny McGinley was the last TD who entered the chamber – allowing Leas Ceann Comhairle Michéal Kitt to begin the day’s business.
