TD faces sanction after describing Dáil as 'a kip'
People Before Profit TD Gino Kenny faces being sanctioned after an outburst in which he described the Dáil as “a kip”.
The Dublin Mid-West deputy was arguing a bill seeking to legalise medicinal cannabis should not have been shelved by an Oireachtas committee.
He said the Government was leaving people with chronic pain “completely ignored”.
However, Tánaiste Frances Fitzgerald said there were very serious problems with the Bill and it was not fit for purpose.
“It had many unintended consequences and it was the health committee itself that decided it should not proceed to the next stage,” she said.
As a row ensued Mr Kenny was repeatedly asked to resume his seat by Ceann Comhairle Sean Ó Fearghaíl who said it was “not the time or place to deal with the matter”.
Mr Kenny retorted: “This place is a kip.”
While the comment was not heard by the Ceann Comhairle, Fianna Fáil’s Declan Breathnach drew attention to it, saying it was “absolutely unparliamentary and inappropriate language”.
The comment is now likely to be referred to the Dáil’s Committee on Procedures which could sanction Mr Kenny.
