Taoiseach's 'empire' attacked

JOHN DRENNAN

Taoiseach Enda Kenny has been accused of "empire building" by TCD Senator Sean Barrett.

Although he came into office on a promise of "slim government", the number of civil servants working in the Taoiseach's office has gone from 187 to more than 200.

In addition, Sen Barrett claimed the average pay of those working in the department was "in excess of that of a Senator" who currently earns €65,621''.

"In addition to visiting this House the odd time, the Taoiseach should run his department and account for it,'' said Sen Barrett.

The senator also made reference to the abolition of Grattan's parliament, comparing it with the Taoiseach's pledge to abolish the Seanad.

"We are demolishing a House of Parliament to pay bank debts of €64bn," he said. "History is repeating itself and I stand by Henry Grattan.''

He also noted that in many of the quangos Fine Gael promised but failed to abolish, average pay is much higher than that of a member of the Seanad. The average pay in the Family Support Agency is €73,500 and in the Citizens Information Board it's €72,100.
