Taoiseach pays tribute to Ian Paisley: ‘He treasured the peace he helped build’
TAOISEACH Enda Kenny has paid tribute to the late Ian Paisley.
Speaking at the close of a two-day Fine Gael parliamentary meeting in Cork, Mr Kenny said he had learnt with sadness of Dr Paisley's death.
“I wish to express my sympathy to Baroness Paisley and her family on the passing of Dr Ian Paisley", the Taoiseach told reporters.
In a statement issued this afternoon, he called him a ‘major figure’ in the history of these islands.
“I had the pleasure of meeting and talking to him in recent years, and I know that he treasured the pace and friendship that he had lived to see, and helped to build, between our traditions.”
He added that in time, history would come to a fuller judgement of his career.
“While he was of course a divisive figure, his greatest legacy will be one of peace.”
