Taoiseach kills off widespread speculation of early election
TAOISEACH Enda Kenny has assured ministers that the Dáil will return in January in a move that has killed off the prospect of an early General Election.
There has been widespread speculation within political circles this week that Mr Kenny was eyeing up an election in early February.
A number of senior members of the Fine Gael parliamentary party, some of whom are close confidantes of Mr Kenny, privately suggested on Monday that the Dail would not return.
But this evening, a senior Government source said Mr Kenny assured members of Cabinet on Tuesday that such a move was not being considered. This paves the way for a polling date in late February following the parties’ Ard Fheiseanna, potentially on February 25 or 26.
“The Taoiseach was clear that he had no intention of pulling the plug earlier than that,” said the source.
