SINN Féin claim the Government is “jealous” of their “imaginative ideas” for 1916 Rising Commemoration events after it emerged An Post is preparing to shoot down the party’s proposal for a light show outside the GPO in Dublin.

Sinn Féin planned a visual display called ‘The Rising Son et Lumiere 2016’ as part of its alternative schedule of events to celebrate the Easter Rising.

However, An Post are expected to turn down the proposal due to it being perceived as overtly political

During leader’s questions, Sinn Féin TD Aengus O Snodaigh claimed his party sought permission from Communications Minister Alex White for the light show outside the GPO.

“There has been no correspondence to date to indicate to us that you are refusing permission,” Mr O Snodaigh said.

“If you are not then maybe you might want to take on board the project…or is it just that there is a jealousy among some about the imaginative ideas that Sinn Féin has come up with to highlight and pay fitting tribute to the men and women of 1916,” he added.

Mr White said Mr O’Snodaigh “makes things up as he goes along” and insisted he had no responsibility for granting permission for events to be held outside the GPO.

“This is a matter An Post and everybody in this house knows it but you can play politics with it if you want,” Mr White said.
