Transport Minister Shane Ross caused uproar in the Dáil as he accused Green Party leader Eamon Ryan of "smoking amnesiac" to forget his time in Government.

It was part of a bizarre exchange that saw an animated Mr Ross round on Mr Ryan during a debate about transport links in Dublin. He had been asked if a proposed underground rail inter-connector linking Heuston Station and Spencer Dock will be included in the new national capital plan, but said such a tunnel was estimated to cost €3bn and the proposal was being redesigned in search of a low-cost solution.

Mr Ryan said he had little faith in the minister.

"I just wish to know what pills this man is taking," Mr Ross responded, adding: "This man must be smoking amnesiac. This man, for his years in the wilderness, he took these amnesiac pills. He has forgotten he was in government when the country went bankrupt."
