Reform TD is no-show at FG talk on Dail changes

A FINE Gael TD who champions Dail reform has defended himself for not turning up at a party meeting to discuss the Government's own proposals to change the way Leinster House operates.

Dublin South-East TD Eoghan Murphy raised eyebrows at the Fine Gael parliamentary party think-in when he didn't turn up for a briefing on Dail reform.

Mr Murphy, who was at the think-in, said he was unable to attend the presentation given by Government Chief Whip Paul Kehoe because he was preparing events in his constituency for the Seanad referendum campaign.

He also said he is "fed up" with meetings on the issue without any action being taken.

Mr Murphy gave a speech at the MacGill Summer School earlier this year in which he despaired at the limited role of a backbencher.

One TD said afterwards: "It was noticed that he (Mr Murphy) wasn't there, since he made that speech."

Mr Murphy welcomed some of Mr Kehoe's reforms but said more needed to be done.
