Rabbitte backing post offices to deliver all Government services
Communications Minister Pat Rabbitte said he believes the country's 1,140 post offices could become the front-of-house service points for all Government agencies in the future.
Mr Rabbitte said in the Dail that given the computer systems already in place, An Post is "well positioned" to handle State cash transactions but also electronic payments to welfare recipients.
"The post office network is well positioned to become the front-office provider of choice for Government and the financial services sector," he said.
He said the arrangement with AIB and the agreement with Aviva for the transfer of its branch offices' personal insurance business to One Direct is a good example of how this could be used on a wider scale.
