TDS and senators will face a much greater level of public scrutiny following the launch of the first ever dedicated Oireachtas television channel, according to Ceann Comhairle Sean Barrett.
Proceedings from Leinster House will now be relayed to 1.1 million households following a significant financial investment by the Oireachtas authorities.
Over 30 years since the first live broadcast of the Budget, the work of the Dail and Seanad will be made accessible round-the-clock for UPC, Sky and Eircom customers. And Oireachtas officials are in negotiations with RTE in a bid to broadcast Oireachtas TV on Saorview.
The Oireachtas yesterday confirmed that €200,000 will be spent on channel production and presentation each year, while a further €250,000 will be spent on distribution. Speaking at the launch of the new channel, Mr Barrett (pictured below) said it will provide the public with an unprecedented insight into the workings of the Dail, Seanad and Oireachtas committees.
"The public can decide for themselves if their representative is worth re-electing or not," said the TD.
