Posters for a public meeting held by a Renua Ireland candidate are mysteriously reappearing all over his constituency after they were taken down.

Frank Cronin, who is running for Lucinda Creighton's party in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown, claims some mischief-maker stole posters for an event he held in November and is erecting them all over his constituency.

The former Newstalk boss believes the culprit is either out to embarrass him or trying to see him landed with a fine from the council for not taking down the posters.

"It's not exactly a campaign-winning strategy if there's another party behind it, but the battle of Dún Laoghaire begins," he said.

Mr Cronin said he could account for about 200 of the 220 posters he put up and said he had to take some down as recently as last week.
