Mr Justice Nial Fennelly has a hugely complex and extensive task in overseeing his Commission of Inquiry.
The areas being examined by the former Supreme Court judge and his team are as follows:
The automated recording of telephone calls, other than 999 calls, into and from garda stations;
The long-running garda investigation into the murder of French film maker Sophie Toscan du Plantier in 1996;
The way in which these two issues were treated by the authorities responsible;
The sequence of events leading to the decision by former Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan to step down on March 25 last year.
