A Sinn Féin spokeperson said the party felt "dumped" by Taoiseach Leo Varadkar when it was excluded from a planned canvass for a Yes vote.

SF president Mary Lou McDonald and the Taoiseach were due to team up, accompanied by Children's Minister Katherine Zappone, at Rathfarnham Shopping Centre and press the flesh with voters ahead of the abortion referendum.

The canvass went ahead - but without Ms McDonald. At the last minute, she was told it was cancelled.

"I think we were dumped," said a Sinn Féin spokesperson. "It's nothing personal against Mary-Lou," the Taoiseach explained.

"The original plan was to have a multi-party canvass but the only ones who were available were me and Mary Lou.

"We thought that would look wrong."
