Labour offers €6k from Byrne to victims' fund
THE Labour Party is offering to give an embarrassing €6,000 donation from rogue solicitor Thomas Byrne to a compensation fund for his victims – seven years after getting the money.
The party has been trying to offload the donation for the past six years, since the solicitor's activities came to light.
Byrne faces up to 20 years in prison for stealing €52m from his best friends, clients, serving gardai and six banks and was found guilty this week of 50 charges of theft, forgery and deception.
The disgraced solicitor donated €6,000 to the Labour Party before the 2007 general election.
Mr Byrne's legal practice was shut down in autumn 2007 with debts of €40m.
Mr Byrne's donation of €6,000 in 2006 was declared by the party in its returns to Standards In Public Office Commission (SIPO), the following year.
