Tanaiste Joan Burton

The Labour Party has gained ground at Sinn Fein’s expense in an opinion poll in tomorrow’s Sunday Independent.

The Millward Brown poll shows Fine Gael on 25pc, unchanged and Fianna Fail on 21pc, up one point.

The Labour Party is on nine per cent, up two points and Sinn Fein on 22pc is down two point.

Independents are on 23pc and are unchanged.

The result is Labour’s highest support level since the local and European elections and the party’s highest since January.

The appointment of Tanaiste Joan Burton has resulted in a slight boost for the party.

Despite the drop in support, Sinn Fein remain the second best supported party.

Fianna Fail’s support is stuck in the low 20s for the past six months.

Fine Gael is still in mid 20s, which is a pattern similar to the start of the year.

The poll was taken among the standard 1,000 people at 66 sampling points nationwide.

The interviews were carried out face-to-face, in home, between September 9-18.

The margin of error is +/- 3.1pc.
