Labour councillor defects to SF
Q LABOUR is prepared for more defections from its ranks after one of its councillors jumped to Sinn Fein.
Tom Redmond, the Cathaoirleach of Athy Town Council in Co Kildare, has switched from Tanaiste Eamon Gilmore's party to Gerry Adams's Sinn Fein.
Labour sources say they expect more defections of town councillors ahead of next year's local elections because party nominations for county council seats will be limited. Mr Redmond's move comes after ex-Fianna Fail Dublin South-East TD Chris Andrews also joined Sinn Fein.
It is understood the membership applications of Mr Andrews and Mr Redmond were ratified at the same Sinn Fein Ard Chomhairle last weekend.
Mr Redmond said he left Labour because of the direction of the party and its decisions in government.
