Kenny forced to cancel series of events due to Storm Stella
Taoiseach Enda Kenny was forced to cancel a series of events on his US tour and take a train to Washington last night in order to avoid a massive blizzard.
Officials made the decision to cut short the Boston and Rhode Island legs of his five-city trip amid fears he could be prevented from making it to the US capital in time for his meeting with President Donald Trump.
Up to 22 inches of snow were predicted for parts of the US east coast today as Storm Stella wreaks havoc on transport. Thousands of flights have been cancelled and authorities have warned of widespread power outages.
Temperatures in Boston fell to as low as -10C in recent days and forecasters were predicting continuous snow for most of today. Strong winds are also expected, leading to predictions of what has been described locally as a "historic and life-threatening storm".
Sources said they could not take the risk of getting stuck in Boston and therefore "unavoidably and unfortunately" had to amend the Taoiseach's programme.
