High profile names including Paul Gogarty and Glenna Lynch at Independent Alliance launch

MORE than 100 elected representatives and guests have turned up for the launch of the Shane Ross led Independent Alliance at the Bridge Hotel in Tullamore, Offaly.

More than 65 of those in attendance are either sitting TDs or current county councillors.

Outside of Shane Ross, John Halligan, Micheal Fitzmaurice, Tom Fleming and Finian Mc Grath, a number of other high profile politicians are also present.

These include the former Green Party TD Paul Gogarty whilst Brian Cowen’s former Fianna Fail running mate Mr John Foley and the former PD councillor Victor Boyhan are also amongst the attendees.

Other high profile attendees include Glenna Lynch, who played a key role in destabilising the Presidential campaign of Sean Gallagher, the AIB whistleblower Eugene McErlean and the Sunday Independent columnist Carol Hunt.

In the private session Shane Ross told the audience: ‘‘We are delighted so many more people than were invited have attended’’.

Mr Ross added those present were at the cusp of "a unique moment of opportunity to create a new movement and a unique model of politics’’.

Mr Ross also outlined a set of fundamental principles that would guide the new party, the most fundamental of which was opposition to the whip system.
