Sinn Fein's Pearse Doherty described the overdraft being sought as a 'second bailout'

People know "when there's an election in the air" because they hear the Government making renewed promises, Sinn Fein finance spokesman Pearse Doherty said today.

Mr Doherty said the economic statements by Finance Minister Michael Noonan and Public Expenditure Minister Brendan Howlin meant nothing to ordinary people.

The Sinn Fein said struggling families were bearing the brunt of the economic downturn.

"The truth is that you have shifted the tax burden on low and middle income families," Mr Doherty told the Dail.

The Sinn Fein spokesman said the Government had lost public trust.

Mr Doherty said the Government caused "a double-dip recession" and delayed recovery.
