Fine Gael leadership contender Simon Coveney "lies awake at night thinking about how he’s going to try fix Ireland", first-time TD Kate O’Connell has said.

The Dublin Bay South TD told the ‘Floating Voter’ podcast that the Housing Minister is a “divil to work” and “he’ll reply to you at nearly any of the night if you text him”.

Ms O’Connell said she decided months ago to back Coveney over Leo Varadkar in the Fine Gael leadership – but she insisted there was no promise of a job in return.

“If you don’t really expect anything you’ll never be disappointed,” she said.

Ms O’Connell described the Cork TD as “bluer than blue”, saying it matters to her that the party leader has Fine Gael roots.

“Being genetically Fine Gael is very important for me,” she said.

Mr Coveney inherited his late father’s Dáil seat, whereas Mr Varadkar is a first generation TD.

Ms O’Connell also lamented the fact Tánaiste Frances Fitzgerald has decided not to contest the leadership.

“It’s very unfortunate that Frances made that decision. I really did think when I went in to Leinster House first that she would be one of the people running.

"It’s a pity we don’t have a woman candidate. She never approached me at any stage to support her,” she said.

Each week on the Floating Voter, INM's political team discuss the main issues affecting Irish politics, bursting the bubble around Leinster House.  New episodes on iTunes and Independent.ie every week.
