A MEMBER of the Dail's Technical Group has warned his colleagues to "steer clear" of the Reform Alliance.

Independent TD Finian McGrath (pictured) has launched a scathing attack on the new political force, accusing its members of "seriously undermining" the Independent brand.

Mr McGrath admitted two of the most high-profile members of the Technical Group, Stephen Donnelly and Shane Ross, appear to be interested in attending a major Reform Alliance convention later this month. Mr Donnelly and Mr Ross have yet to confirm their attendance at the event.

However, Mr McGrath last night warned his colleagues about the group that includes former European Affairs Minister Lucinda Creighton.

"I and others wouldn't touch them with a barge pole," Mr McGrath told the Irish Independent.

"They are a group of disillusioned Fine Gael TDs and they are seriously undermining the Independent brand. I would say to Stephen (Donnelly) and Shane (Ross), steer clear of them and their event.

"We all want change. We all want reform. We all want a new Ireland but the best way forward is more Independents in the Dail, fighting for our citizens."

Mr McGrath's Independent colleague John Halligan said he "wouldn't be caught dead" at the event in the RDS.

"While I wouldn't go as far to tell colleagues not to attend, I would say that the Reform Alliance are just Fine Gael in disguise," he told the Irish Independent.

Wicklow TD Billy Timmins, a Reform Alliance member, said Mr McGrath was "scraping the barrel" with his remarks. "I'd say to Finian, be not afraid, we're no monsters," he said.
