Fine Gael TD Kate O'Connell's sister was verbally reprimanded by a junior minister after a controversial tweet about Mary Mitchell O'Connor.

Theresa Newman, who is also Ms O'Connell's parliamentary assistant, came in for criticism after tweeting a photograph last May of the then-jobs minister.

In the image, Ms Mitchell O'Connor was holding a 'Leo for Taoiseach' poster and it was captioned: "There's MMOC working to keep her job in the Ministry of Jobs, fair play to her. #CoveneyForLeader."

The Irish Independent has learned that after the incident, party officials asked Junior Minister Damien English, who was Simon Coveney's campaign manager, to intervene and the two held a private meeting. Mr English asked Ms Newman to remove the image and temper her online activity. When contacted last night, Ms Newman confirmed she had met with the junior minister and said she had not posted any similar tweets since.
