GardaÍ in Athenry have sent a file to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) over the sending of highly abusive online messages to Labour Senator Lorraine Higgins, writes Daniel McConnell.

Ms Higgins (inset) complained to gardaí last year after she was subjected to a series of threats, one of which was a threat on her life.

The Irish Independent has seen a copy of a written apology to Ms Higgins from one of her attackers.

The man apologised for the distress caused to her and her family, which he said was the result of misplaced anger at "political matters".

In response, Ms Higgins said: "I appreciate his frustrations, but there is a way and means of venting your frustration. Abusing and threatening is not the way to deal with it."
