Environment Minister defends Irish Water set-up costs
Environment Minister Alan Kelly has defended the €180m set up costs of Irish Water.
The new State agency came under fire over the substantial expenditure on establishment costs, including the spending on consultants.
Mr Kelly said he accepted the vast majority of the money spent setting up Irish Water was justified, as it was approved by the independent regulator.
The minister said the Commission for Energy Regulation, said €172.8m of the set up costs were justified and only €8m was not required.
“The vast bulk of the establishment costs were accepted,” he said.
“If that is their judgement, I have no reason to doubt it,” he added.
