'Enda Kelly, former Taoiseach of Northern Ireland' - a British MP got his facts about Irish politics seriously confused
A British MP has been branded "utterly clueless" after discussing Irish politics on TV last night.
Tory MP Bernard Jenkin appeared on Sky News to discuss the crunch Brexit negotiations surrounding the Irish border issue.
Unfortunately for Mr Jenkin, it seems like he should have brushed up on his facts about Ireland before the segment.
He said: “If you listen to Bertie Ahern, if you listen to Enda Kelly – these are two former Taoiseachs, Prime Ministers of Northern Ireland.
"They haven’t quite played ball like the present Irish Prime Minister."
Of course it wasn't long until social media users noticed that not only had he mixed up former Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny's name, but he had also claimed that Northern Ireland is led by a Taoiseach:
Just an FYI @bernardjenkin. Bertie Ahern and Enda KENNY (not Kelly) are former Taoisigh of the Republic of Ireland, not Northern Ireland!!— David Donohoe (@dvddnh) December 5, 2017
But if you're happy to be utterly clueless on prime time TV, go right ahead.
Taoiseachs of NORTHERN Ireland.??????— Pat Griffin (@PatGrif21889883) December 5, 2017
Enda KELLY !!!!!!!
1. The man's name is Enda Kenny, not Enda Kelly.— Grace Cuddihy (@GraceCuddihy) December 4, 2017
2. Northern Ireland does not have a Taoiseach because it is part of the UK. The Republic of Ireland has a Taoiseach.
A simple Wikipedia search would have cleared up both questions @SkyNews https://t.co/FVZHLjjsZe
