Committee urged to fight Kerins' legal action
Members of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) were yesterday advised to robustly contest the legal action being taken against them by former Rehab Chief Executive Angela Kerins, writes Daniel McConnell.
At a private meeting of the committee with its legal advisers, which lasted an hour, committee members were given an update as to the action, which was taken by Ms Kerins, who has accused the committee of acting way beyond its legal remit.
While the action is being taken against the individual members of the committee, as there is state involvement, the Oireachtas parliamentary legal advisor, Melissa English, was present.
It is understood that Senior Counsel advice will now be sought in order to mount a full defence of the case, which Ms Kerins lodged in the High Court back in July.
One source at the meeting told the Irish Independent: "The case will be robustly defended. But we will act together and we are now just getting everything in order."
Separately, the committee is also to re-invite former Dublin Docklands Development Authority Chairman Prof Niamh Brennan before it in relation to its investigation of the failed €412m Irish Glass Bottle site purchase.
