Bruton backs call for Grealish to 'withdraw' his migrant remarks
Calls for Galway TD Noel Grealish to withdraw remarks he made about African migrants at a meeting about plans for a direct provision centre in his constituency have been backed by Communications Minister Richard Bruton.
Mr Bruton said he had not directly heard the comments made by the independent TD Mr Grealish, who referred to economic migrants from Africa coming to "sponge off the system" in Ireland, but that he was aware of their content. "From what I have heard of them, I think he should withdraw those comments. They are not at all appropriate," he said.
"These are difficult issues to deal with but politicians have a responsibility to handle those difficult issues in a way that can bring people together rather divide people," he added.
Mr Grealish, who has been a supporter of Fine Gael in government, made the comments at a meeting in Oughterard, Co Galway.
