A fine choice - minister lauded for dropping library penalties
A decision to abolish fines for the late return of library books has put a minister in line for a European award.
Rural Affairs Minister Michael Ring is a finalist in the Europe-wide 'Innovation in Politics Awards' for introducing the Government's new public library strategy.
Key policies in the strategy included the end of library fines and increased opening hours.
The Innovation in Politics Awards, which are run by the Vienna-based Innovation in Politics Institute, acknowledges public initiatives which make a difference in order to highlight innovation.
DCU is the partner institution for the awards in Ireland.
Mr Ring said he hoped the Irish approach to making libraries more accessible "can inspire other countries".
