Politicians pay respects to Monica Barnes
TV presenter Miriam O'Callaghan was among a number of well-known figures who paid their respects to former Fine Gael politician Monica Barnes, who died last week.
A champion of women's rights, Ms Barnes died suddenly in her home in Killiney last Thursday.
Among those in attendance at Ms Barnes's reposal in Monkstown yesterday were Education Minister Richard Bruton, Culture Minister Josepha Madigan and Minister of State for Higher Education Mary Mitchell O'Connor.
Also there to pay her respects were former Progressive Democrats leader and Health Minister Mary Harney.
Former Fine Gael politician Nora Owen, who served as Justice Minister in the 1990s, also attended with former MEP Mary Banotti.
Ms Barnes' funeral will take place today at the Church of Our Lady of Good Counsel in Killiney.
Last week, President Michael D Higgins said that Ms Barnes "was a pioneer in the struggle for a space for women's rights to be discussed".
Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said she was "inspirational" to women and young people in Fine Gael.
