A young man has been killed when his van crashed into a tree in Co Roscommon.

The driver, named locally as Stephen Coleman (25), was pronounced dead at the scene of the incident, which happened on the Ballaghaderreen to Gurteen road at 8am yesterday.

The victim, who was driving alone, was a single man from Edmondstown, near Ballaghaderreen, who worked as a plumber.

His body was taken to Roscommon University Hospital and gardaí closed the road and mounted traffic diversions to allow forensic investigators access.

Gardaí appealed for witnesses to contact them at Castlerea garda station.

Local Sinn Féin councillor Michael Mulligan said: "The entire community is deeply shocked.

"Our hearts and prayers go out to his parents and family at this sad time.

"There is deep sadness that such a tragedy could happen to a man so early in his life."
