SONY'S PlayStation 4 looks set to trump Microsoft's Xbox One in the battle of the gaming consoles this Christmas, according to analysts.

The electronics giant's success – selling one million consoles in its first 24 hours of availability in the US – is backed by a combination of cheaper prices and better pre-launch publicity.

Analysts IHS predict that Sony's new PlayStation will sell 2.4 million units before Christmas and 49 million machines over the next five years, with the latest Xbox to sell 2.2 million before Christmas and 38 million over the next five years.

Irish shops will start selling Microsoft's Xbox One from tomorrow for €500; while Sony's games machine, at €400, is due to be launched here a week later.

Ireland has historically been a strong market for video game machine makers and we have the world's highest number of PlayStation consoles per head of population.
