Pipe bomb explodes in Belfast suburb

Brian Hutton

A PIPE bomb which partially exploded on a suburban street in Belfast could have killed people, a police chief has warned.

Detectives have appealed for information about the device which went off on Melrose Street in the south of the city, last night.

Army bomb experts called to the scene said it was a viable pipe bomb which had partially exploded.

PSNI chief inspector Mark McEwan hit out at those behind the attack.

"It is only by good fortune that members of the public were not killed or seriously injured last night," he said.

"Whoever left this device has shown complete disregard for the safety of the local community."

Forensic officers are carrying out tests on the device.

Detectives have asked anyone with information about the incident to come forward.
