GARDAI are still waiting to formally speak to an airline pilot who suffered serious injuries when he was stabbed on the Aran Islands this week.

Des Collins (47) remains in Galway University Hospital after the incident, in which he was stabbed in the chest on Tuesday afternoon at Mainistir on Inis Mor.

He underwent further surgery yesterday but is expected to make a full recovery.

A second man, Vincent McCarron (68), was also treated for minor injuries sustained in the incident.

Gardai are now waiting to formally speak to Mr Collins upon his release from hospital.

A spokesperson said: "The injured party remains in hospital. When he is released we will formally speak to him and take a statement of complaint. Our investigation will follow on from that.

"We have spoken to all parties involved but we will do so again formally following the statement of complaint."

Gardai have appealed for anyone who was in the vicinity and who may have witnessed anything to contact gardai in Kilronan or Salthill on 099 61102 or 091 514720, or the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111.
