Pics: The most impressive 'Mayo4Sam' campaign that you will ever see
The last time a Mayo team travelled over the Shannon with Sam Maguire, there was an infamous incident on the journey home.
If they defeat the Dubs this year, there will be another incident which will be discussed for years.
“I’d be honoured if Mayo carried Sam back home in my car if we win. What better way to celebrate than in this great car,” said Paul Martin, whose Ferrari 430 is decked out in green and red in support of the men from the west.
Paul, 45, along with his wife Olivia, are bringing the supercar on the Irish Cannonball this week. The green and red Ferrari is one of 190 cars that will take off from 3Arena tomorrow for the rally.
There are several stops along the way, but there is one route Paul is particurally looking forward to. He said: “We’re leaving Dublin tomorrow and leading the event into Westport on Friday. It’s going to be great. We are both from Castlebar, so it will be a great honour.
“Crowds normally range between 15,000 and 20,000 on the streets, so hopefully we will be able to top that in Mayo.”
The car was wrapped by Rethink Graphics in Balbriggan.
When suggested that this paint-job may have been done for nothing, Paul said: “With the year that’s in it, we thought it was a great idea.
"There’s no denying than my best days in Croke Park have come mostly from U2 concerts, but there’s always one good game in Mayo every year. We came underneath the radar this year.
"This could be our year.”
