Phone books dumped in tourist spot

Greg Harkin

EIRCOM customers who hadn't received a new phonebook in years have finally found out why -- they were dumped in the countryside.

The picturesque Bluestack Mountains in Co Donegal are in one of the most remote areas of Ireland and the locals figured they might have trouble getting a phonebook.

It turns out the company had tried to issue phonebooks to customers, but they ended up dumped in an area popular with walkers and tourists between Ballybofey and Donegal Town.

Eircom has promised to investigate how the books were dumped in a ditch.

A hill walker who found them said: "There were hundreds of them, all still inside their plastic wrappers just dumped in an area that most people wouldn't see. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw them."
